The Cumberland is an underground pre-Temperance inspired drinking den hidden behind a 1920’s fridge door in Manly. It is the venue where detail is everything – spiral stone lined staircase – check – custom-made dumbwaiter – check – Thomas Crapper brass cistern – check – butter leather curved banquettes – check – vintage furniture – check – the minute details reveal the narrative.
Upstairs, through a striking teal shopfront inspired by late 19C trader store, is the Cove Deli – a working delicatessen and providore – featuring fine detailed joinery, penny round tiles, custom mosaic, an impressive meat slicer and hanging dry goods. Through the fridge door at the back of the store you descend down a stone clad spiral staircase with peep holes into the venues wine cellar. The main bar area features aged brass, patinaed render, ornate period details (like the original 1900’s urinal all the way from Upstate New York!), hand honed tables, curated decorative and sourced art, inset marble bar top and foot rests, vintage mercury mirror to add depth to the space, custom made brass floor plates and beautiful reclaimed timber flooring.
Every single square inch is AZB designed to the Nth degree and manifested in collaboration with Matt Clifton, owner and visionary of The Cumberland.
The interior of this basement bar is completely transformative and takes patrons on a journey through the story it tells.
