We love working on interior design projects, and when this one came along, it was just made for us! Trumps is already a well established beauty name in Sydney’s CBD, but when the team told us they were planning to open a huge day spa and salon in the newly renovated InterContinental Hotel Double Bay, we couldn’t wait to get started.
The brief was to create a true urban oasis, to make clients feel like they had completely left their daily cares behind. The space needed to flow naturally, from public areas to an airy salon, to more private, intimate spaces for treatments. And of course, given the location and the needs of visiting Hollywood and rock royalty (and real royalty too), we were also tasked with creating a warm, elegant VIP space.
To create the ultimate atmosphere of luxury and hospitality, we turned to Morocco for inspiration, channelling the lush gardens and hidden villas, classic movies like “Casablanca” and of course, Marlene Dietrich’s star turn in “Morocco”. The luxurious 1920’s villas in Spanish and Moorish styles that dot the hills around Double Bay also inspired some of the design elements; with a distinctly Deco mood.
We worked with subtly luxe finishes: muted golds, rich woods and textured creams and whites, to conjure a contemporary oasis that would make everyone feel like a VIP for a day. The spa zones, in dark, rich browns, with low-key temple lighting and hammam tiles, were kept deliberately darker, enhancing a feeling of being relaxed and protected. Custom laser-cut screens echoed traditional Moorish patterns to divide the space into zones without losing light and airflow.
The spaces were layered with detail to create a retreat that invites repeat visits and continual discovery. The VIP room is concealed behind a mysterious sliding, pyramid studded door; curved, pierced panels enclose a luxurious waiting area with plush sofas and vintage occasional tables. There’s always another surprise. From the front glass doors with their custom burnished brass handles in a bold leaf motif, the 1940’s style day bed and marble counter in the reception area, through to the mix of retro-futurist brass chandeliers and perforated pendant lights, to the potted orchids and coffee table books, the whole space was designed to feel like home – a very luxe home with a mix of Moroccan and grand Hollywood influences – and a real retreat from daily life.
